Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network

The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network was the guest speaker at our first meeting in April. Emily Ford, Director of Education, gave a slide show presentation to share the function, goals, and several of their rescue and rehabilitation of mammals.  TMMSN Most of the rescued dolphins are rehabilitated and released back in to the wild, ones that are deemed non-releasable by NMFS, are placed in suitable marine parks.

TMMSN is a non-profit, volunteer based organization, and the only stranding network in Texas authorized to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals. The organization is fully supported by donations from the public and grants. A $200 donation was given to the TMMSN from the Galveston West Beach Lions Club.

Call 800-9Mammal if you discover a live marine mammal.

Ironman Triathalon

Ironman Triathalon

This is the third year the Galveston West Beach Lions have manned the last aid station for the Ironman Triathalon in Galveston, and it was another fun day and very successful event!

Starting early Sunday morning at 7:00am setting up the station, preparing tables of water, sport drinks, bananas, and sport snacks, the group was ready to go help serve the cyclists as they ride by the last station before the third leg of the Triathalon.

The Club had 17 volunteers along with several others that joined in for the fun, including Alice Williams with Libbie’s Place and Martha La Foy with Mainland Medical Center. Coffee &  juice, breakfast sausage and bisquits as well as turkey and ham crouisants were provided by Marshall & Stacey Monroe,  fellow Lions with Stacey’s Creative Cuisine.

The first cyclists arrived at the station around 10:15am with Lance Armstrong leading the race! There were 2,700 entries this year, 700 more than last year, and we tried to feed or hand off drinks to all that wanted them!

Congratulations on the “90th” anniversary of the Galveston Lions Club, the first Lions Club in Texas!
